Kayleigh's Law: Supporting Victims of Abuse
During a recent press conference, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell was joined by Kayleigh Kozak to announce a new law that provides further protection for victims of abuse. Kayleigh's Law allows victims of certain serious crimes, such as sex crimes or violent crimes, to petition the court to prohibit a defendant from contacting the victim after a defendant's probation has been terminated.
County Attorney Announces Policy Changes to Address Gun Violence
Violent crime in Maricopa County is soaring. Between August 19 and August 29, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office received submittals for 16 homicides.To address the increase in violent gun crime, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell is making important changes to office policies that relate to the disposition of cases that involve the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Gun Crime Crackdown Continues
This Summer, MCAO partnered with the Phoenix Police Department, City of Phoenix, ATF, and US Attorney for the District of Arizona to reduce the number of illegal firearms in our communities and targets those committing crimes with guns.

Community Forum: Fighting Fentanyl Together
MCAO joined forces with the Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD) to host a community forum on fentanyl and raise awareness of the significant impact this deadly drug is currently having in our communities.
Over 100 community members attended the event and learned about what they need to do to keep their kids and teens safe.
County Attorney Rachel Mitchell led the discussion with a speaker panel made up of representatives from MCAO's Drug Enforcement Bureau, Arizona High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), GUHSD's Resource Officer, and Community Bridges. Kim Humphreys from Parents of Addicted Loved Ones (PAL) ended the presentation by sharing his family's story in dealing with addiction. Rise Up Glendale also participated and provided free Narcan for participants after the event.

Catalytic Converter Etching Event in Mesa
MCAO once again partnered with Midas and the Mesa Police Department to offer free catalytic converter etching. Midas helped 343 residents from all over the valley get their vehicle's catalytic converters etched and painted, they were even able to etch RVs!
Our next catalytic converter etching event will take place October 23 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Midas on 2428 N. Scottsdale Road, hope to see you there!

In September, MCAO's Community Affairs Team and staff provided 17 safety presentations to community organizations across the valley on trending scams, internet safety, situational awareness, and home safety. MCAO also hosted Citizens Academy programs where 31 members of the community learned about the work of the County Attorney's Office and the criminal justice system.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving Light The Night Vigil
MCAO participated in MADD's Light the Night Candlelight Vigil remembering all who have been injured or lost as a result of impaired driving. Victim Service's Field Response Bureau Chief Carrie Howe was the keynote speaker and spoke about the importance of supporting victims and holding impaired drivers accountable.
Summer Casual Day Campaign Supports SARRC
MCAO employees raised close to $2,000 for the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SARRC) as part of their Summer Casual Day Campaign. SARRC is an internationally recognized nonprofit that conducts innovative research, provides evidence-based practices, disseminates effective training, and builds inclusive communities for individuals with autism and their families.
