TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Nearly All Ballots Reported in Maricopa County

|
The Maricopa County Elections Department has counted nearly all August Primary Election ballots. The county is on track to count more Primary Election ballots than ever before. While there have been some social media rumblings about the speed, over the last two decades its taken 7-10 days to count all Primary Election ballots. The reason? Arizona’s elections laws provide flexibility for voters, but require stringent security, oversight and checks on the system to ensure only valid ballots are counted. Some of the statutorily required efforts include:
- 100% signature verification review
- Signature curing
- Bipartisan ballot processing
- Provisional ballot research
Once early ballots are signature verified and separated from their envelope, the ballots are tabulated with observers present on equipment that is not connected to the internet. In Maricopa County, we can count 110,000-140,000 ballots a day on average. When a contest has a write-in candidate or potential overvote, the equipment is programmed to send a digital image of that ballot to a bipartisan adjudication team of two to read the write-in candidate’s name and review and determine if the voter marked a true overvote.
On Saturday Maricopa County's political parties completed a hand count audit of four races including Governor and U.S. Senator on 5,000 early ballots and ballots from five Vote Centers. This is a key step to ensure the accuracy of the Primary Election. The hand count boards confirmed the results match the tabulation equipment.
Once all ballots are counted, the county will conduct a post-election accuracy test on the equipment and the Board of Supervisors is set to canvass the election on August 15.

PETS AND PLACES
Pet of the Week
Clover arrived at the shelter in January and is now the longest resident at MCACC. She's a super fun, wiggly, and playful girl who adores spending time with her friends. She's very friendly and loves attention but is also happy to entertain herself with toys if you're too busy to play. With a patient introduction, she may do well with kids and/or other dogs in her new family. Clover's adoption fee is only $25, and includes her spay, microchip, vaccinations and more!
