How your business can fill the gap
.
The use of third-party delivery services has increased in popularity over the past several years. In many cases, the use of these services has become a necessity for business owners, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
An issue that has arisen here in Maricopa County, with third-party delivery services and food service establishments, has to do with third-party delivery drivers filling open drink orders. Per the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s 2017 Food Code, one of the duties of the Person in Charge (PIC) of a food establishment is to ensure that employees are properly trained in food safety. Third-party delivery drivers are not employees of the food service establishments and their food safety training cannot be verified by the PIC of these establishments. Open drink orders that are filled for delivery must be filled by trained employees of the food service establishment, not by third-party delivery drivers.
One solution to this issue is to offer only canned or bottled beverages through these services.
For additional information regarding third-party delivery services and food safety, see the Conference for Food Protection’s guidance. Do not hesitate to contact your Environmental Health Specialist if you have questions or would like to discuss additional options for your business.
