TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Vaccines Are Our Best Chance at Protecting Children
|
|
63% of adults over 18 years old have received at least one dose of the vaccine. To protect those who can’t get vaccinated, like children under age 12 and people with certain serious medical conditions, everyone who can get vaccinated should. This can prevent continued spread to those who are at higher risk. Search for vaccine locations by vaccine type and location on our vaccine location map. |

Data Shows Cases in Children Are Increasing Rapidly
Here is the reality about a month into the school year for most Maricopa County students:
- 1 in 4 of all COVID-19 cases are now children.
- There are 3 times as many school outbreaks as this time last year and the number has doubled every week
- The vaccine is not approved yet for anyone under 12 years old.
|
Here’s what we can do about it:
- Getting the vaccine protects you AND kids under 12 who cannot yet get the vaccine.
- Sending your children to school in a mask protects them and other students around them

NEWS BITES
20th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks
Maricopa County would like to honor all of the people killed or injured in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, as well as the first responders and emergency personnel who saved lives and the service members who fought for our freedoms in the years that followed. To mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we spoke with two Sheriff’s Office employees who served in our military after the attacks about how that event shaped them and their service. Watch their story below.
Lead Paint Safe Program
Lead in paint is a serious health hazard, especially for children. Dwellings built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint inside on windows, walls, cabinets, and doors, and outside on siding, porches, railings or gates. We have a program that helps makes homes lead-safe for eligible applicants and dwellings.
Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing September as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. We know the past year and a half has been especially hard for our community. If you’re struggling, we encourage you to talk to someone you trust or call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
September is National Preparedness Month
From fires to floods to monsoon damage, disaster can strike at any time and take many forms. Visit the Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management to learn how to build a plan and be ready!
Animal Shelters Are Full
Animal Care and Control is working hard to find permanent homes for all of our shelter pets at a time of increased capacity. We rely heavily on our incredible animal-loving Maricopa County residents to make that happen through adoption and fostering.

Pet of the Week
Stella
Who could resist this smile?? This gorgeous girl is Stella, a super fun girl who's still just a pup at only about one and a half years old, so she can't wait to bust out of the shelter and into a real home! As you can probably imagine from her young age, Stella is very energetic and playful, and would love to be part of an active family. She enjoys going for walks, sitting on cue for treats, playing with toys, and splashing around in kiddie pools, and may also enjoy hiking with you once the weather cools down. She's also very sweet and adores getting attention from you, she often leans in against you for pets or rolls over for belly rubs to soak up all the love she can!
