TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Help For Gila Bend
|
|
Maricopa County is providing half a million dollars to the Town of Gila Bend to assist with flood recovery efforts. The Board of Supervisors approved the $500,000 in funding during its regularly scheduled board meeting on August 18, 2021. The County has been deeply involved in the Gila Bend recovery since four inches of rain fell a week and a half ago. Among these efforts:
- The Sheriff's Office rescued more than 25 people from their roofs by helicopter.
- The Department of Emergency Management created an Individual Assistance Center (IAC) to help people apply for assistance. It is accessible at Maricopa.gov/GilaBendRecovery.
- Flood Control District and MCDOT crews are working to repaid the berm along Sand Tank Wash.
2 people died and at least 140 homes and dozens of businesses were damaged during the flooding.

What We Know About Approved & Authorized COVID-19 Vaccines
All COVID-19 vaccines have been proven to be highly effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
Today, Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine was granted full approval for people ages 16 and up by the FDA. Curious about how a vaccine gets full approval? This video details the steps and safety measures involved. It's worth noting the Pfizer vaccine is still under emergency use authorization for ages 12-15.
Both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are also available under an emergency use authorization. Getting to this point still requires rigorous safety testing. If you'd like to learn more about vaccine safety, visit our FAQ page.

- Parents may also request tests for other people living in the same home as students who may be experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
- Student results from the take home Binax COVID-19 tests should be immediately reported to school officials.

PETS AND PLACES
Pet of the Week
![Adopt Tita](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/AZMARIC/2021/08/4859285/tita_original.gif) Tita has a way of smiling the biggest, happiest, most contagious smile and has earned a place as a staff and volunteer favorite. Although she may be considered a senior at around seven years old, she's by no means done living her life and is still the life of the party! She's a smart girl who's already mastered quite a bit of training and will happily show off her "sit" and "shake" on cue for treats. She has done well interacting and socializing with other similarly-sized dogs she's met during her shelter stay, and we think she may do well with children as young as twelve. With how cute AND well-behaved AND friendly this little lady is, it's difficult to believe she's been waiting to find a home for well over 100 days. Adopt Tita Now!
