TODAY'S KEY MESSAGE
Layers of Protection Help Fight Delta Variant
|
|
The CDC says we're facing "a new war" with COVID-19. The Delta variant is much more contagious than the original strain. As Delta spreads in Maricopa County, more people are testing positive for the virus. In fact, 14% of tests came back positive for the most recent week of data (anything over 10% is considered high transmission). Researchers say that it's rare, but with this strain, even vaccinated people can get infected. While those breakthrough cases are typically milder, Public Health is reinforcing a message that a layered approach to protection is everyone's best bet. The more layers you have (vaccines, masks, social distance), the more protected you'll be. |

Why Vaccines Are Even More Important Now
COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and our best chance at reducing COVID-19 spread and variants.
- The more people are unvaccinated, the more opportunities the virus has to spread.
- The more opportunities the virus has to spread, the more opportunities it has to mutate, leading to new variants.
- But the more people are vaccinated, the harder it will be for the virus to spread and mutate.
No vaccine is 100% effective, so we expect to see some breakthrough cases for people who have been fully vaccinated. Still, for those folks, the data shows the vaccines are doing their jobs by making those breakthrough cases milder and by preventing hospitalizations and deaths.

Pet of the Week
Kenmore
Need a new dishwasher? Kenmore is up to the challenge! No need to pre-rinse, he can double as a disposal system for your leftovers, is better looking than the leading brand, AND he'll even show off tricks in exchange for the snacks you give him.
It's hard to imagine, but this good boy has been waiting here in the shelter for over five months now, waiting for the right family to notice him and bring him home. At only around two years old, he still has most of his life ahead of him and he can't wait to spend it with you! He has the sweetest enthusiasm for all the little things in life, like running zoomies in the yard, playing fetch, splashing around in kiddie pools, and basking in attention from his friends. This goody boy loves wiggling and wagging his way through life, and is going to make such an amazing addition to some lucky family!
