Second Dose Appointments And Recommendations
|
|
We have an update for those of you looking to schedule second dose appointments.
-
If you were vaccinated at a Maricopa County regional POD, you’re not on your own. We are here to help!
- Public Health has started to create second dose events and appointments for February at our regional PODs.
- Invitations to sign up have started to go out, via email, to those who received their first dose at a county POD and still need a second.
- Those invitations will be prioritized based on the date of a person's first dose.
- Demand for vaccine still exceeds supply so this new batch of events and appointments won’t serve everyone in Phase 1A and 1B. However, we are committed to getting first and second doses to everyone just as soon as we are able.
- Additional appointment times will be opening as more vaccine supply becomes available. Please keep checking back for updates at Maricopa.gov/COVID19Vaccine.
- If you were vaccinated at State Farm Stadium, you will need to visit the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) website regarding State Farm Stadium POD second doses. This is a state-operated vaccination site and all scheduling runs through ADHS.

How Much Vaccine Has Maricopa County Received?
Of the 210,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine allocated to county PODs up to this point, 156,925, or 75%, have gone into arms. The rest we have set aside to use the remainder of this week and next week for already scheduled appointments so we can keep the PODs operational. We are always trying to work at least a week ahead.
We have 29,800 Moderna doses allocated for long term care facility residents and staff as part of continuing Phase 1A, and also for already scheduled school PODs. The remaining doses of Moderna vaccine are allocated to pharmacies, federally-qualified health centers and other partners.

How Much Vaccine Is Needed To Vaccinate Everyone In Phases 1A And 1B?
Public Health estimates there are 500,000 individuals in Phase 1A and Phase 1B priority populations. Vaccinating everyone would require about one million doses of vaccine. If the county added adults ages 65-74 to its Phase 1B priority group, that would add another 400,000 people, meaning we'd need an additional 800,000 doses to fully vaccinate these groups.

Is Limited Vaccine Supply The Biggest Hurdle With Ramping Up Vaccinations?
Yes, supply is by far the biggest limitation. There is a lot of uncertainty around how much vaccine we will receive and when we will receive it. This makes planning ahead difficult. The Pfizer vaccine also presents challenges since there are limited healthcare settings which have the proper cold storage to keep and administer the vaccine quickly, according to the manufacturer’s requirements.
Maricopa County does not offer appointments without knowing for sure there are enough vaccine doses to support those appointments. As more vaccine becomes available, we will be able to get to expand the number of sites offering vaccinations, meaning appointments will be easier to get. Our ultimate goal is to make getting a COVID-19 vaccine as easy as getting a flu shot. This will take time and is dependent on vaccine supply catching up to demand.

How Is Maricopa County’s Supply Of Vaccine Being Used?
Maricopa County currently has five points of dispensing sites (PODs) in operation, plus doses allocated to pharmacies, federally-qualified healthcare centers, and vendors for long-term care facilities. We are also setting up closed events for staff from public, private, and charter schools and childcare facilities, and are developing additional sites that can help serve those who use public transportation or need walk-through sites. Our current vaccine supply allows us to support our current events, and we will be ready to open additional locations as more vaccine supply is available.

School Vaccination Sites
Closed vaccination events for school staff and childcare workers begin this weekend. We are excited to begin the important work of providing vaccine protection to school workers! These events serve anyone who is an employee of a public, private, or charter school or a childcare facility in the area. We estimate there will be more than a dozen of these events countywide, based on geographic location.
These events are not open to the public, but they benefit everyone because they will limit the number of Phase 1B individuals who will need to be vaccinated at public sites.
If you have questions about eligibility for these sites, please visit Maricopa.gov/COVID19vaccine1B.
