The county administration building at 301 W. Jefferson Street is now lit blue at night in support of health care workers, public health professionals, and first responders. We are grateful for their service, sacrifice, and expertise during these challenging times.
The Arizona Department of Health Services now provides data on confirmed COVID-19 cases by zip code. While it may be tempting to look for “hot spots” or jump to other conclusions based on this data, Public Health wants residents to be aware of the limitations of this data. Whether you see 5 cases or 50 cases in your zip code, we know that COVID-19 is circulating throughout the county, and you need to take the same precautions to prevent illness: stay home as much as you can, stay 6 feet away from others outside your home, and wash your hands routinely.

Maricopa County Department of Public Health data is clearly showing that the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations is flattening. This is likely attributed to the protective measures individuals and the community are taking to slow the spread of the disease and is a signal to the community to keep what we are doing.
Governor Ducey’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” order expires on April 30, unless he extends it. Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, Medical Director of Disease Control with Maricopa County Public Health, explains whether we know if Maricopa County will have hit our peak number of COVID-19 cases by that point.
What is Public Health's Overall Strategy to Combat COVID-19?
- Isolation of ALL sick individuals (regardless of COVID-19 testing) per guidance.
- Interviewing all positive cases; provide guidance on notifying close contacts and proper quarantine of household contacts.
- Encouraging social distancing for everyone in the community but especially for high-risk individuals (aged 65+ or chronic medical conditions).
- Employing specific strategies for those living in communal settings; individuals experiencing homelessness, individuals who are incarcerated; and individuals living in long-term care facilities.
- Providing specific guidance for healthcare, cities/towns, EMS and first responders.
- Providing updated information and guidance to the general public.
Maricopa County is prioritizing getting personal protective equipment to long-term care facilities which are at greater risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Click here to see how Public Health is working to assist long-term care facilities.
Maricopa County has taken a number of steps to reduce the risk among those experiencing homelessness. From providing handwashing stations to securing additional beds and space across the Valley; creating a process for housing people discharged from hospitals to shelters; implementing a tent distancing program on county property in the downtown Phoenix core; and providing advice and support.
