Maricopa County remains under the official declaration of a local emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the State of Arizona is under a “Stay Home” order until April 30, 2020. The Maricopa County Joint Information Center (JIC) is compiling a weekly list of resources for County residents to manage the physical, economic, social and emotional impacts of this declaration. I am grateful to those on the front lines helping to fight this pandemic, including our public health professionals in Maricopa County. A lot of people paid tribute to them last week during National Public Health Week, but I encourage all of us to continue to express our appreciation in the weeks ahead as they help us navigate this challenging time in our community's history.
Data from Maricopa County Public Health shows a slower rise in hospitalizations due to COVID-19. This is encouraging news and indicates social distancing measures are working. However, public health officials urge the public to continue adhering to the Governor’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected” order.

Do you have any personal protective equipment you don’t need? Donate it to the public health professionals who need it most. Public Health’s Donation Management Program is available to take your PPE at 1645 E. Roosevelt St, Phoenix AZ, 85006, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. In my last update I mentioned Maricopa County established a unified command structure so public health professionals, emergency management personnel, communications professionals, and others can collaborate in a single location. Under this structure, the role of incident commander is shared by Robert Rowley, director of the Department of Emergency Management, and Marcy Flanagan, director of the Department of Public Health. Among the objectives of this unified command: to conduct disease surveillance and investigation; to support county, local, tribal, and health care partners; and to provide critical information in a timely manner. The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department realizes that the community is seeking outdoor recreation opportunities where they can walk, hike, run, and bike while practicing safe social-distancing. The population at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) shelters is at its lowest level in recent memory as the organization continues to adjust operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to the generosity of the Bissell Foundation and the overwhelming response of donors and the public, MCACC has dramatically reduced its shelter population by adopting out and finding foster placement for hundreds of dogs and cats. This unprecedented reduction in sheltered animals has afforded Animal Care and Control the opportunity to empty one of its locations entirely in order to complete much-needed repairs in preparation for what could be a very busy summer. The Maricopa County Library District (MCLD) facilities remain closed until further notice, but County libraries are still providing critical services to the public, including digital learning opportunities. The health and safety of all who enjoy libraries remains the top priority.
Digital access is available to Maricopa County residents that do not have a current library card. Temporary digital cards are available for the duration of library closures.
