With the official declaration of a local emergency in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, Maricopa County set into a motion a series of operational changes including the opening of a Joint Information Center (JIC).  The JIC is being run by the Office of Communications in partnership with the Department of Public Health and Department of Emergency Management.  The goal is to centralize communication efforts to better share public health guidance and respond to requests for information about the pandemic.  Public information officers and communication specialists from several county agencies are involved, many of them working remotely. Read the press release here.

All media requests related to COVID-19 should be directed to the Joint Information Center using the following email address: caomedia@maricopa.gov These requests will be sent to the assigned JIC public information officer for follow-up and response.

Mask Recommendations

More people are wearing cloth masks in public because of the CDC’s new recommendations.  Public Health wants to remind everyone that the masks are not a substitute for staying six feet away from others.  Here are a few things to keep in mind if you have to leave your home:

Long Term Care Facilities

Long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospice facilities are at greater risk for the spread of COVID-19.  Public Health is providing guidance to these facilities to isolate residents immediately following a confirmed positive case. Public Health will also allocate additional PPE to these facilities in order to help them prevent spread.  Overall case counts from long-term care facilities are now available to the public.

Business Spotlight

Healthy doctors, nurses and other medical professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak receive a welcome reprieve from the stressful hours treating patients, and can rest easy keeping their families safe by not sleeping at home, through complimentary hotel nights at five Phoenix-area properties owned by real estate development and investment firm Caliber. The Caliber hotel group has been working with Banner, HonorHealth and Valleywise to offer their health care professionals free nights in their hotels, so they can get some rest but not put their families at risk. The details of the program are included in this flyer and press release. This is just one example of how our business community is helping others through this difficult time.

We are here to assist you during this difficult time.  As always, please let me know if I can be of assistance.

Sincerely,
Steve Chucri, District 2
