Last night Governor Ducey announced that he was taking additional steps to curb the spread of COVID-19. One such step is ordering the restriction of restaurant activities to takeout, drive-thru and delivery options in counties where positive COVID-19 cases have been reported, which does include Maricopa County.
In a statement the Governor said “These latest actions are based on the facts and on data, and come after careful consultation with public health experts from every county in Arizona, our hospitals, local elected officials, and private sector partners.”
Provisions of the new order include:
- Beginning at the close of business on Friday, March 20, restaurant operations are restricted to takeout, drive-thru, and delivery options in counties with confirmed cases of COVID-19
- Beginning at 5:00PM on Friday, March 20, allows restaurants to sell alcohol for delivery and takeout
- Allows manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to buy back unopened products from restaurants, bars and clubs
- Beginning at the close of business on Friday, March 20, closes all bars, theaters and gyms in counties with confirmed cases of COVID-19

Maricopa County’s Environmental Services Department understands that these are difficult times for business operators due to COVID-19. The health and safety of Maricopa County citizens remains our top priority during these unprecedented times. Recent inspections have revealed that shortages of hygiene and sanitation supplies are affecting food service establishments. Ensuring proper handwashing and sanitizing of equipment is critical to maintaining public health. If you are experiencing a shortage of your standard cleaning and sanitizing supplies, consider the following to meet your needs.
- Use shampoo or bar soap if liquid soap is not available
- Use any clean dry paper products to dry hands after handwashing if paper towels are not available
- Consider additional approved sanitizers for warewashing or sanitizing food contact surfaces, such as Peracetic Acid, Ethanol, or Hydrogen Perioxide
All chemical sanitizers must be applied in accordance with the EPA- registered label use instructions. For a complete list and approved use limits, please refer to link below:

If you are not able to maintain an adequate supply of any of these items, you must voluntarily close your food establishment until supplies are available. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these food safety measures.
We are a partner with you during this difficult time. Our Environmental Health Specialists can be a resource to assist you with questions related to food safety in this quickly changing environment. Please call 602-506-6616 to connect with us.
