Maricopa County has reported its first West Nile death of the season. Maricopa County's Public Health Department urges the community to "Fight the Bite" by following these precautions:
- Avoid mosquito bites day and night
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or other EPA-registered repellants according to the product label on exposed skin and clothing
- Drain and remove containers that hold water from around your home where mosquitoes can breed such as plastic covers, buckets, old tires, plant trays, pet bowls, toys, and boats
- Scrape the sides of the dish or inside potted plants where mosquitoes lay their eggs
- Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens, no holes, and remain closed
- If it’s not too hot, wear lightweight clothing that covers your arms and legs
- Ensure that swimming pools and decorative water features are properly maintained

  Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is using ‘smart’ technology to shorten commute times through construction zones. The technology is known as Smarter Work Zone (SWZ) and MCDOT is one of the first in the nation to utilize SWZ on heavily traveled city/urban roadways known as “arterial” roadways.

Improvements at Sun Lakes Fire Station
  Maricopa County Department of Transportation coordinated with the Sun Lakes Homeowners Association and the Sun Lakes Fire District to provide additional access to the fire station on Sun Lakes Boulevard and Fairway Boulevard. The project included removing an existing median, relocating an irrigation main, paving, striping and most important, avoiding existing power lines!

  Enjoyed getting more details about plans for the Town of Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility at the construction phase open house on June 18. Impressive well thought out plans for this critical training faculty.
Town of Queen Creek completion of Riggs Road
  On May 29 the Town of Queen Creek had a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of Riggs Road. The expansion of Riggs Road opened on June 3.
This was made possible with a partnership between several communities in Maricopa County and Pinal County. Maricopa County Department of Transportation continues to work on building roads and building relationships with communities and community leaders that make such improvements possible.

  At the welcoming luncheon on July 17 for long-time friend, Vice Mayor of Taichung, Taiwan, Bruce J. D. Linghu along with Dr. Kelli Ward and City of Scottsdale Councilwoman Suzanne Klapp.
  Enjoyed visiting the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada last week to get a first-hand look at how another fast growing county is using innovative technology to deal with traffic issues.
