A Message From Chairman Gates

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had the chance to enjoy our Maricopa County Regional Parks during the beautiful April and May weather.  As the heat continues to rise, be sure to hydrate, carry water, and use sunscreen, especially while you are out recreating in the next few months.

May was an important month as we approved the 2020 Maricopa County Tentative Budget on May 20th.  We will have the Final Budget Adoption on June 24th in the Board of Supervisors Conference Room. All are welcome to come learn about the budget and provide public input.

Thank you to Mayor Kate Gallego and to all who attended my June County Coffee at North Mountain Brewing.  We had a great turnout and fantastic discussion. My next coffee will be in September with special guest and location to be announced.

Please note, there will be no County Coffee or Open Conversation with Chairman Gates in July or August. Enjoy your summer.

All my best,

Bill

Cave Creek Landfill Injection Well Update

Maricopa County is in the process of cleaning up groundwater underlying the Cave Creek Landfill. The project is in Phase 1 of the clean-up, drilling the injection well, which has a time frame of June through August of 2019. A truck‐mounted drilling rig will drill, develop, and test the well. At the well site property, the drilling company will construct a 24‐foot noise barrier panel system to completely surround the drilling area and reduce noise and light pollution as much as possible. The drilling portion of this phase will last 3 to 4 weeks, 24 hours per day. After drilling, work will be less noisy and occur intermittently on a 24‐hour schedule. Site work will include pumping the well for hydrogeologic testing. A temporary pipeline will run from the well site to a wash on the Sonoran Preserve for the discharge.

All four phases are expected to be completed by early 2020. For questions email cavecreeklandfill@mail.maricopa.gov or call Stephanie Bracken, Public Information Officer for the City of Phoenix, (602) 534-1209 or Brian Kehoe, Maricopa County Waste Resources & Recycling Management, (602) 506-8997.

Preventing Mosquitoes in Maricopa County

Fight the bite day and night!

Have you been noticing more mosquitoes this season? Whether you’ve seen them or not, mosquitoes are buzzing in our neighborhoods.

The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department (MCESD) is warning residents not only about a greater quantity of mosquitoes, but also – and more importantly - a higher number of mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus (WNv) and Saint Louis encephalitis (SLE).

As of May 24, 2019, MCESD’s Vector Control Lab has already reported 93 positive WNv positive mosquito samples and 55 SLE positive mosquito samples. These statistics contrast with the same time period in 2018 when there were just seven WNv positive mosquito samples and two SLE positive mosquito samples. While human cases are low (Maricopa County Public Health has reported two-laboratory confirmed WNv positive human cases this year), we all need to do our part to protect ourselves and others. MCESD implements an aggressive year-round mosquito surveillance and abatement program: every month we deploy over 800 mosquito traps to thousands of areas that we monitor and then treat as necessary.

What can you do?

There are some simple things you can do to prevent mosquito breeding around your home and your neighborhood. By joining forces with your neighbors you can have a greater impact!

  1. Eliminate standing water. Drain any container around your home that may collect water (even small amounts can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes).  If you have a decorative pond or a swimming pool, make sure the pump is working and water is circulating.
  2. When outdoors, make sure you and your loved ones are avoiding mosquito bites. Wear long sleeves, long pants and light colored-clothing.
  3. Apply insect repellant, following label instructions. Look for active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, or Oil of Lemon eucalyptus (OLE).
  4. Protect yourself day and night! Different mosquitoes bite at different times and can vector different diseases. Daytime biting mosquitoes are considered more of a nuisance than the night time biting mosquitoes that can carry WNv and SLE.
  5. Call us at 602-506-0700 if you need to report a mosquito problem. If you and others in your neighborhood are experiencing mosquito problems, have one person submit a complaint online or to give us a call. One call is all we need to initiate monitoring of an area and follow-up with proper action or treatment.
