Since we announced plans to close the current east shelter, located at Rio Salado and Loop 202, there has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure the county continues to provide service in the East Valley.
I’m pleased to share the county is planning to build a new east shelter to replace the Rio Salado location. Everything available at the current location, from intake to adoption to sheltering, will be available at this new location.
Maricopa County Animal Care and Control wants to spend every dollar it gets on things that directly impact animal welfare. To this end, current plans call for building the new east shelter on county-owned land at Baseline Road and Mesa Drive. The site is conveniently located off the Superstition Freeway with adjacent bus routes, making it easily accessible for visitors, staff, and volunteers.
Animal Care and Control’s mission is to save lives by finding permanent homes for animals that come into our shelters. Last month, our live-release rate was 96%. That’s almost unheard of for a county shelter operation and we expect the trend to continue.
To learn more about our plans and to stay up-to-date on the new shelter process, I encourage you to visit https://www.maricopa.gov/shelterplans. We will continue to provide updates to this website as we get more information.

Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority granted $100,000 to Arizona Friends of Foster Children’s Keys to Success program. Executive Council Charities contributed an additional $50,000.
The money will pay for career, education, and employment development services to help youth aging out of the Arizona foster care system get personal and financial stability.
Professional Career Development specialists will work with the youth to develop a plan that includes long-term career and personal goals and the development resources to get there.

Speaking with my colleague Chairman Steve Chucri at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Good Government Breakfast Series hosted by Salt River Project with moderator Patricia DiRoss.
Jeff Tourdot
Human Services, Adult and Senior Services Division
Answering calls after business hours. Saying yes when it would be easier to say no. Taking on someone else's problem as your own.
"Each of these situations challenges us to make a choice to commit to doing the right thing by those we are privileged to serve."
Jeff Tourdot is part of the Human Services Department's Adult and Senior Services Division and the quote above is his.
I want to highlight what Jeff and his team did recently as an example of service that goes above and beyond what is expected. Click here to read his story.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In Arizona last year, at least 90 people were killed as a result of domestic violence. No one should have to live in fear.
