Brief Masthead 2018 CD

Vol. 14, No. 4                                                                 April 2018

Chris DeRose

Welcome, Clerk of the Court Chris DeRose!

The Clerk’s office welcomes Chris DeRose, Governor Doug Ducey’s appointment for Clerk of the Superior Court in Maricopa County. Chris was appointed on March 22, 2018 and because retired Clerk Michael Jeanes’ elected term ends in January 2019, Chris will complete Michael’s current term of office. A candidate will be elected Clerk in November of 2018 to begin a four-year term in January 2019. Because the superior court is one state court placed in each of the 15 counties, the Clerk of the Superior Court runs on the election cycle of statewide elected officials, rather than the cycle of county elected officials. This is also why the governor makes midterm appointments, rather than the county board of supervisors.

The Clerk’s office is busy updating Clerk DeRose on office operations and making the transition as seamless as possible so the office and customer experience remains timely, accurate, and professional. The Clerk’s customers will benefit from Chris’ extensive experience at all levels of Arizona’s courts. As an attorney, he was previously Senior Litigation Counsel to the Arizona Attorney General, trying 47 cases in front of the Court of Appeals and arguing twice before the state Supreme Court. He is a former professor of Constitutional, International, and Election Law, and was voted “Law Professor of the Year” by his students. For the new Clerk’s biography, see the Clerk’s website at http://www.clerkofcourt.maricopa.gov/clkbio.asp.

Clerk’s office earns award for innovative practices

On April 9 the Clerk’s office will receive the 2018 Arizona Attorney General’s  Distinguished Service Award for Innovative Practices. The Clerk’s Victim Locate Program was recognized for its outstanding contributions to victims and for the office’s efforts on behalf of victims’ rights and assistance. The Clerk’s Victim Locate Program works to find victims who are owed restitution but who do not have a valid address with the Clerk. Since its implementation in 2010, the program has distributed nearly two million dollars to individuals, some of whom have been out of contact or who had not tracked their case for decades before receiving the restitution owed to them.
