Healthy Arizona Worksites Program Recognizes 44 Statewide Employers at Annual Award Event; FitPHX Recognizes 43

PHOENIX (June 24, 2016) – The Healthy Arizona Worksites Program (HAWP) in partnership with the City of Phoenix FitPHX program held its annual recognition event at Steele Indian School Park’s Memorial Hall on June 23, 2016. Forty-four businesses from across the state were recognized with Copper, Silver and Gold awards for their worksite wellness program strategies. Additionally, 43 “FitPHX Businesses,” those businesses located in Phoenix that attended Healthy Arizona Worksites trainings through the city’s partnership with HAWP, were honored.

“The Healthy Arizona Worksites Program delivers evidence-based initiatives that improve the health of employees,” said Mark Martz, policy consultant with the Arizona Department of Health Services. “The numbers show healthy employees reduce their risk for both short-term illness and long-term chronic conditions. When employees succeed, the workplace succeeds.”

Also in attendance was keynote speaker, Jacqueline Kurth, from the Industrial Commission of Arizona. Kurth provided information to employers on the new treatment guidelines for the management of chronic pain and the use of opioids for all stages of pain management for treatment of injured workers.

“Our nation is in the midst of an opioid epidemic and employers play a vital role in how chronic pain and addiction is dealt with in the workplace,” said Dr. Bob England, director of Maricopa County Department of Public Health. “HAWP’s growing network provides a great platform for employers to learn about best practices on issues such as opioid abuse as well as other emergent public health issues.”

Estimates indicate more than 500,000 employees have been impacted due to employers’ commitment to HAWP and wellness in the workplace since its inception in 2013. Much of HAWP’s success has been attributed to its strong statewide partnerships such as the one with City of Phoenix’s FitPHX program.

“The goal of FitPHX is to make metropolitan Phoenix the healthiest region in the country,” said Councilman Daniel Valenzuela. “We’re proud that the partnership between Healthy Arizona Worksites and FitPHX has reached more than 117 businesses, representing more than 236,000 families. Providing large and small businesses with strategies to improve their employees’ health is an excellent and proven strategy that can increase productivity, save money and lead to a healthier community.”

At today’s event, employers were recognized by HAWP in three distinct categories depending on where they are with their worksite wellness programs. Businesses in Phoenix who attended the HAWP training were honored with the FitPHX award. Attached please find a list of award winners.

The next FitPHX/HAWP training is scheduled for September 14, 2016. All interested employers may register at www.HealthyAZWorksites.org.
