Video shows progress in Mexican wolf recovery, including population numbers and genetic diversity
Biologists from the Arizona Game and Fish Department and its conservation partners are now actively engaged in spring Mexican wolf fostering efforts. Fostering is an innovative technique used by the Mexican Wolf Recovery Program to increase genetic diversity in the wild Mexican wolf population in the United States.
This video provides a great overview of some of the elements in the recovery program, including the annual population count, the extensive work that goes into fostering efforts, recovery criteria, and program history. See the video.
Partners in Mexican wolf recovery in the United States include the Arizona Game and Fish Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, USDA APHIS Wildlife Services, White Mountain Apache Tribe, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and the Saving Animals From Extinction program.
