Work on SR 79 and 79B intersection in Florence begins

Shoulders restricted at intersection for next two months

The Arizona Department of Transportation recently started intersection improvement work at State Route 79/79 Business in Florence.

Since 2010, ADOT has been studying various alternatives to improve both the safety and movement of vehicles through the SR 79/79B intersection in Florence. In an effort to enhance safety and improve traffic flow at the State Route 79/79B intersection, the northbound SR 79 connection to SR 79B was closed earlier this year.

After further traffic engineering analysis, ADOT has developed another option that will restore movement to the northbound SR 79 connection to SR 79B until the ultimate roundabout configuration can be designed. The interim solution will include spot pavement improvements, including widening shoulders and realigning the previously closed section of roadway.

During the work over the next two months both shoulders on northbound SR 79 will be closed and the speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph during work hours. One lane of traffic will be open at all times.

Although ADOT works on the interim intersection, the agency has recently added a project to construct a roundabout at the intersection in the five-year construction program. The project is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Highway Safety Improvement Program.
