Project to divide US 191 south of Safford in final stages of work

Motorists traveling south on US 191 south of Safford can expect travel restrictions through mid-November while the Arizona Department of Transportation completes work on a newly divided segment of the highway.

Intermittent lane closures are ongoing and will continue on weekdays through Friday, Nov. 9 in the segment of southbound US 191 south of State Route 266.

Crews will be working in the highway median and shoulder between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., requiring brief quarter-mile lane closures in various areas throughout the workdays. A single lane will be available in the closure areas and the posted speed limit will be 55 mph.

The work is part of a $10 million project to divide the final four-mile segment of US 191 between Interstate 10 and SR 266. New lanes were constructed for northbound traffic and the existing lanes have been improved for southbound traffic.

The project also has included drainage improvements.

Next week, crews are scheduled to add the final pavement markers on the southbound lanes, bringing the project to completion.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
