UPDATE: US 191 traffic south of Safford to share new northbound lanes beginning Wednesday as construction progresses
ADOT crews to work on existing highway until mid-September when motorists begin using new divided highway
The Arizona Department of Transportation will shift all traffic on US 191 south of Safford onto the newly constructed northbound lanes on Wednesday, June 27 as work continues to build a divided highway between Interstate 10 and State Route 266 in Graham County.
Between 10 a.m. and noon Monday, ADOT will close the older segment of the highway that begins five miles south of SR 266 and the newly constructed highway will be opened for two-way traffic. All traffic will be directed to use the new highway until mid-September, when work to divide the segment of US 191 will be completed and motorists can begin traveling on the new divided highway.
During this phase of construction, ADOT crews will make improvements to the older highway and improve drainage culverts. The posted speed limit will be 50 mph through the work area.
Traffic had been scheduled to move onto the new highway today, but the switch was briefly delayed.
ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down, and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.
ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
