Current work taking place at the Lindsay Road bridge includes painting the recently-finished bridge abutment walls and preparing the false work for the bridge, which is the temporary structure that supports the forms that will give the concrete on the bridge deck its final shape.

This month marks the halfway point of construction of the Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) widening project between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive, which is adding two general-purpose lanes in each direction from Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to Gilbert Road and one general-purpose lane in each direction from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive. The project is also modifying existing interchanges to improve traffic flow.
Significant progress has been made on the project this past year, which is on track for an on-time completion in spring 2027. We would like to share with you an update on construction progress, as well as upcoming work in the project area.
Progress to Date
|
|
 |
|
Construction activities in the last year have focused on building the new general purpose lanes and widening bridges and ramps in several locations to accommodate the new lanes. Progress to date includes:
- Bridge widening work at Arizona Avenue, including new drilled shaft foundations, abutments, girders and the bridge deck. (See photo at end of alert.) Also see how crews placed the bridge girders in a time-lapse video.
- Work on drainage improvements throughout the project corridor.
- Completion of 14 of the 26 on- and off-ramp reconstructions.
Pictured left: Crews working on the bridge abutment on the eastbound side of Loop 202 at the Lindsay Road interchange earlier this year.
|
- Completion of mechanically-stabilized earth (MSE) walls at the Consolidated Canal bridge (see photo) and at the eastbound on-ramp and westbound off-ramp at Arizona Avenue.
- Completion of numerous retaining walls and sound walls along east- and westbound Loop 202 throughout the corridor.
- Installation of fiber optic cable used for closed circuit cameras and other equipment to allow ADOT to monitor traffic conditions and help manage traffic flow along the freeway.
- Installation of new freeway lighting, overhead sign and dynamic message sign foundations at numerous locations throughout the project.
- Installation of new sidewalk and crosswalk ramps on several cross streets throughout the corridor, including Val Vista Drive and Gilbert Road.

Pictured above right: At the bridge over the Consolidated Canal, mechanically stabilized earth, or MSE walls are built to abut the bridge. Built with horizontal layers of soil reinforcement, like strips or grids, placed within the backfill. This bridge originally featured a hexagon design, so the concrete panels are individual hexagons placed together.
Upcoming Work
Drivers can expect to see the following work to be completed in the second half of the project:
Ramps
- Early 2026: Improvement work requiring two separate two-week closures of individual ramps at the Loop 202/Loop 101 interchange.
- Continuing work to reconstruct and widen on- and off-ramps. All ramp improvements are expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Pavement work
- Asphalt work on all cross streets, except Cooper and Lindsay roads and Val Vista Drive, which were recently improved on other projects.
- Loop 101 to Val Vista Drive: Pave the new lanes and smooth pavement using the diamond grinding process.
- Val Vista Drive to Williams Field Road: Smoothing pavement using the diamond grinding process.
Walls
- Completion of new sound and retaining walls throughout the project corridor.
Bridges
- Completion of the Lindsay Road bridge work.
- Completion of the Consolidated Canal bridge widening. This may require weekend or overnight full freeway closures.
- Deck joint replacements on the Loop 101 to Loop 202 high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) ramp bridges.
ADOT reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert and be prepared to merge with caution when approaching and traveling through all work zones.
