Loop 101 widening construction in Scottsdale made big progress in 2024

In January 2024, the Arizona Department of Transportation, in partnership with the city of Scottsdale, began construction of the widening project on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Princess Drive/Pima Road and Shea Boulevard. The project will add one general-purpose lane in each direction and modify existing interchanges to improve traffic flow.

The project is now at the halfway mark and remains on target for completion by early 2026. 

We appreciate your patience during construction and would like to share with you an update on construction progress since summer 2024, as well as upcoming work in the project area.

Progress to Date

Construction activities since summer 2024 have focused on paving the new general purpose lanes and work to widen bridges and ramps in several locations to accommodate the new lanes. Progress to date includes:

• Bridge widening work at Princess Drive/Pima Road, Bell Road and the CAP canal, including new drilled shaft foundations, abutments, girders and bridge decks.
• Reconstructing ramps at Princess Drive/Pima Road, Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, Cactus Road and Shea Boulevard.
• Widening of Loop 101, including: 
• Northbound Loop 101 between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Princess Drive/Pima Road.
• North- and southbound Loop 101 from Shea Boulevard to Cactus Road.
• All other areas of north- and southbound Loop 101 between on- and off-ramps that are scheduled for reconstruction. 
• Drainage improvements along Loop 101, including a new 72-inch storm drain at Shea Boulevard, and new drainage at reconstructed ramps.
• Installing new LED lighting and light shields.
• Reconfiguring the Frank Lloyd Wright traffic interchange to a diamond configuration.

Long-term Ramp Closures

Long-term ramp closures are needed to realign on- and off-ramps to accommodate the additional general purpose lanes. Below is the anticipated start schedule for the remaining ramp closures. Each closure will last approximately 60 days.  

• Jan. 7, Raintree Drive southbound on-ramp.

• Jan. 13, Cactus Road southbound off-ramp.

• Feb. 10, Cactus Road northbound on-ramp.
• Feb. 24, Raintree Drive northbound off-ramp.
• March 24, Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard southbound off-ramp.
• May 18, Raintree Drive northbound on-ramp

• July 18, Raintree Drive southbound off-ramp.

NOTE: This schedule is an estimate and may change. Ramps not listed here were reconstructed in 2024.

Please help us promote highway safety. Speed limits are reduced to 55 miles per hour in work zones for the safety of you and workers. 

Slow down, stay alert and be prepared to merge with caution when approaching and traveling through all work zones.
