Northbound I-17 narrowed to one lane between Loop 303 and State Route 74 this weekend (Sept. 27-30)

Local street closures in neighborhoods east of I-17 will be in place. Drivers are encouraged to stay on the freeway and avoid detouring through neighborhoods.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to allow extra travel time while the following restrictions and closures are in place this week and weekend for the I-17 Happy Valley Road to SR 74 Pavement Project.

Weekend Restrictions (Sept. 27-30)

• Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive and SR 74/Carefree Highway starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, and ending at 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30. The following roads will be CLOSED:
• Eastbound Jomax Road at I-17 
• Eastbound Dixileta Drive at 27th Avenue, at the city of Phoenix waste transfer station (local traffic only) 
• Local roadways along North Valley Parkway into the Fireside at Norterra community (local traffic only)

Weeknight Restrictions (Sept. 25-26)

• Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive and State Route 74/Carefree Highway overnight from 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26. The following ramps also will be closed:

• The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Dove Valley Road 
• The northbound I-17 off-ramp at SR 74/Carefree Highway
• The southbound I-17 on- and off-ramps at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive

Crews are continuing a much-needed project to improve the pavement along I-17. An older and rough top layer of asphalt pavement has been removed and specialized equipment is now being used to diamond grind the base concrete pavement, creating a smoother, safer and longer lasting riding surface along 6 miles of I-17. Along with diamond grinding, work will include repairing and pouring concrete at the bridge deck joints. Please note, it takes time for concrete to cure before vehicles can travel on the roadway, so although no visible work may be seen, vehicles cannot drive on impacted sections of roadway until Monday morning.

UPCOMING RESTRICTIONS AND CLOSURES

Weeknight Restrictions (Oct. 2-3)

• North- and southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between SR 74/Carefree Highway and Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive overnight from 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3. 

Weekend Closure (Oct. 4-7)

• Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between SR 74/Carefree Highway and Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive and then CLOSED at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, and ending at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7. 

Weekend Closure (Oct. 11-14)

• Southbound I-17 will be CLOSED at Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive and then narrowed to one lane to Jomax Road starting at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and ending at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14.

Weekend Closure (Oct. 18-21)

• Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane between Happy Valley Road and Loop 303 and then CLOSED at Loop 303 from 10 p.m Friday, Oct. 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 21.

Schedules are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors.

ADOT urges drivers to plan ahead for delays; slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the restrictions are in place.
