The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers of daytime intermittent lane restrictions along US 163 in northern Arizona near Kayenta from Monday, May 20, through Friday, June 28, as crews perform road maintenance work on the highway.
Drivers should plan for delays of up to 20 minutes while the following restrictions are in place Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.:
- US 163 will be reduced to one lane only with alternating north- and southbound travel in segments between Kayenta and the Arizona-Utah state line (mileposts 394 to 417).
- One lane in each direction will remain open during paving work in Kayenta (mileposts 394 - 396). Business access will be maintained.
- Onsite flaggers and a pilot car will direct drivers through the work zone and provide access to businesses.
- The speed limit will be reduced in the work zone.
- The restrictions will be lifted each day after work hours.
- No work is scheduled for weekends and holidays.
Drivers should be prepared to stop when approaching and driving through the work zone.
The restrictions are needed so crews can place a chip-seal treatment on the road, which helps extend the life of the pavement. Crews will return at the end of July to permanently stripe the road.
