The Arizona Department of Transportation has reopened the southbound I-17 on-ramp at Thunderbird Road and the frontage road to Sweetwater Avenue in Phoenix. The ramp and frontage road opened on Monday, Nov. 7, as part of the ongoing I-17 regional drainage system project between Dunlap Avenue and Greenway Road.
Upcoming restrictions:
- Westbound Thunderbird Road will be closed between the northbound I-17 frontage road and Metro North Corporate Park from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, to 5 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

Detour: Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues to Cactus or Greenway roads.
Beginning Friday, Nov. 11 and continuing through spring 2023, the following closures will be in place around the clock:
- The southbound I-17 off-ramp at Thunderbird Road will be closed.

Detour: Drivers can exit I-17 at Greenway Road or Cactus Road and use 35th or 19th avenues to access Thunderbird Road.
- The southbound I-17 frontage road between Acoma Drive and Thunderbird Road will be closed.

Detour: Drivers can use Acoma Drive to 31st Avenue to access both Thunderbird and Greenway roads.
- For access to Rise Thunderbird apartments, a portion of the frontage road will remain open for local access only. Drivers may travel both north- and southbound from Acoma Drive to the complex entrance.
Periodic weekend and overnight closures of Thunderbird Road will also be required. ADOT will provide more details prior to these closures. The closures are needed to install a new storm drain along the frontage road and connect it to the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel north of Dunlap Avenue.
ADOT advises drivers to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while work is underway.
