Motorists who use southbound State Route 143 should plan for lane restrictions beginning tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 11) and for longer-term changes to the roadway configuration beginning early Monday, Oct. 17. The Arizona Department of Transportation urges drivers to slow down and stay focused while a new work zone is established between University Drive and Interstate 10 in conjunction with the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.
Here’s what to expect:
- From 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, through 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, southbound SR 143 will be narrowed to two lanes between University Drive and I-10 so crews can build a temporary route - known as a "shoofly" - on the west side of the highway. Drivers should slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment.
- Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, both southbound SR 143 and 48th Street will be closed at I-10 through 4 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17. The southbound SR 143 on-ramp at University Drive and the southbound SR 143 ramp to eastbound I-10 will also be closed. See detour information here.
- Early Monday morning, drivers will begin using the "shoofly," which shifts southbound traffic around a construction zone where crews will begin building a new bridge that will eventually connect southbound SR 143 to the new eastbound I-10 Collector-Distributor road.
- The "shoofly" will be in place through early 2023. The speed limit on SR 143 will be reduced to 35 mph.
