Plan ahead for lane and shoulder restrictions on Interstate 17 between New River and Flagstaff from Monday, May 23, to Friday, May 27

As work continues on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix for fiber-optic cable installation and the Interstate 17 Improvement Project between Anthem Way and Sunset Point, motorists should expect lane and shoulder closures in the week ahead. However, no closures or restrictions are scheduled over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The Arizona Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down, be prepared to merge into the open lane and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following lane and shoulder closures are in place:

Southbound I-17

  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane and shoulder closed) from Cornville Road to Arena del Loma Road (mileposts 293-289) daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday morning, May 23, to Thursday afternoon, May 26.
    • A vehicle-width limit of 14 feet will be in place.
  • The southbound I-17 right shoulder will be closed in half-mile increments from the I-40 junction to Stoneman Lake Road (mileposts 340-309) daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Monday morning, May 23, to Thursday evening, May 26.
  • The southbound I-17 left shoulder will be closed near Black Canyon City (milepost 243) daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday morning, May 23, to Thursday afternoon, May 26, for geotechnical investigation.
  • Southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (left lane closed) near Black Canyon City (milepost 244) overnight from 7 p.m. Monday, May 23, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, and from 7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, to 5 a.m. Friday, May 27, for geotechnical investigation. 

Northbound I-17

  • Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane (right lane and shoulder closed) from the runaway truck ramp to General Crook Trail (mileposts 283-285) daily from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday morning, May 23, to Thursday afternoon, May 26.
    • A vehicle-width limit of 14 feet will be in place.
  • The northbound I-17 right shoulder will be closed in half-mile increments from the McGuireville Rest Area to Stoneman Lake Road (mileposts 296-309) daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Monday morning, May 23, to Thursday evening, May 26.
