Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) widening project nears completion

ADOT’s $185 million project to widen and make other improvements along Loop 101 between Interstate 17 and Pima Road is expected to be completed in January.

Weather permitting, crews will complete final lane striping the weekend of Jan. 7-10, marking the last planned full-weekend closure within the Pima Freeway project's boundaries. Shortly after the striping is finished, crews will remove the work zone 55 mph speed limit signs, restoring the speed limit to 65 mph.

Additional activities will continue for the next few months to complete minor work items, some of which may require lane restrictions.

Project in review

In 2021, project crews completed the new general purpose lanes to help ease congestion on this busy stretch of freeway. After this major milestone was reached, there was still work to be done to prepare the final roadway surface, which included repairing and sealing joints in the concrete pavement, resurfacing the pavement through the use of a long-lasting diamond grinding treatment and marking lane lines with contrasting white and black stripes for improved visibility. New overhead signage for freeway exits and 10 new electronic message signs also were installed along the project corridor.

All of this work required overnight and weekend closures of the freeway to allow crews to safely mobilize and operate large equipment, such as cranes and diamond grinders, across multiple traffic lanes.

In addition to widening and resurfacing the freeway, the project included:

Improving frontage road and ramp connections at 11 interchanges within the project corridor.
Adding an auxiliary (merge) lane in each direction between Seventh Street and Cave Creek Road to enhance safety and adding room for drivers to enter or exit the freeway.
Constructing a new overpass structure (the future Miller Road alignment) about halfway between Scottsdale and Hayden roads.
Widening bridges in several locations to accommodate the new travel lanes.
Installing thermal cameras at off-ramps to be used for wrong-way vehicle detection when fully operational.
Building new retaining walls and noise walls in several locations.
Making drainage improvements.
Installing new energy-efficient LED lighting along the freeway. The lights use wireless sensors for automatic activation at sunset, which helps save energy costs and tax dollars.
Replacing numerous signs throughout the corridor, including at interchanges, arterial streets and on the frontage roads.
Making ADA improvements to upgrade ramps, sidewalks and pedestrian signals at interchange locations.
Replacing landscaping.

The project made ADA improvements to curb ramps, sidewalks and pedestrian signals at interchange locations, including the eastbound Loop 101 frontage road at 15th Avenue.
