Expect extended detour during westbound I-10 closure between US 60 and 40th Street near Sky Harbor Airport

Catching a flight? Plan plenty of extra time to allow for 17-mile detour

A 17-mile detour will be in place when westbound Interstate 10 is closed between US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and 40th Street from 10 p.m. Friday, August 6, to 4 a.m. Monday, August 9. The westbound US 60 and the southbound SR 143 ramps to westbound I-10 will be closed, along with the westbound I-10 on-ramps at Broadway and Baseline roads.

Detour: Drivers on westbound I-10 will exit onto eastbound US 60, then travel east to northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway). Drivers will continue north on Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to access westbound I-10 beyond the closure. Watch the detour video

Airport traffic:  Northbound SR 143 will not be accessible from westbound I-10. Drivers should use Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to Sky Harbor Boulevard (or southbound SR 143).

Those heading toward the West Valley can avoid the closure and detour altogether by using the westbound Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway to connect with I-10 at 59th Avenue.

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises anyone traveling in the area to allow at least 30 minutes of extra time while the closure is in place. Traffic will be heavy and the detour route adds extra mileage. The detour route aims to keep drivers on the state highway system instead of local roads and streets which are not designed or constructed to handle large volumes of interstate traffic.

Crews are continuing to remove rubberized asphalt from I-10 to prepare for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project
