The Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers the Interstate 40 Meteor Crater Rest Area east of Flagstaff will be closed to all drivers starting Sunday, August 15.
The closure, which will be in place for about three weeks, is needed as crews rehabilitate and repave the rest area’s parking lot. The rest area facilities have been closed to the public since January for renovation work. Only commercial truck drivers had access for parking.
The nearly $3.5 million renovation project, located at milepost 235, also includes upgrading the facility’s electrical, mechanical and water/wastewater systems as well as site improvements.. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall.
During the closure, the nearest traveler facilities will be in Flagstaff and Winslow.
This work is part of a larger project that also included the renovation of the I-40 Painted Cliffs Rest Area near the Arizona-New Mexico state line. That work was completed last September.
