This updates the May 12 alert to add the westbound Cactus Road lane restriction.
The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers who use northbound Interstate 17 at Thunderbird Road to plan for daily on-ramp restrictions beginning May 13, for work on a regional drainage project.
ADOT urges you to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:
- The northbound I-17 on-ramp at Thunderbird Road will be reduced to one lane daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., today (May 13) and Friday, May 13-14, and Monday, May 17, until 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 19.
- Westbound Cactus Road will be restricted to one lane from 6 a.m. Thursday, May 13, to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 19.
Ongoing Closures
- The southbound I-17 off-ramp at Cactus Road is closed.

Detour: Drivers can exit I-17 at Thunderbird Road and use 35th or 19th avenues to access Cactus Road.
- The southbound I-17 on-ramp at Thunderbird Road is closed.

Detour: Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues to Greenway or Cactus roads to access southbound I-17.
- The southbound I-17 frontage road between Thunderbird and Cactus roads is closed.

Detour: Drivers can use 35th and 19th avenues as alternate routes. Local business access will be available via 28th Drive from Cactus Road and North Metro North Corporate Park (2800 West) from Thunderbird Road.
ADOT is constructing improvements to the storm water drainage system along I-17 between Greenway Road and Dunlap Avenue to reduce the risk of flooding when heavy rains occur. The improvements include constructing a new storm drain system to direct storm water into the Arizona Canal Diversion Channel, new drainage basins at Thunderbird Road, and removing the existing pump stations at the cross streets.
