Preliminary work on the west Willcox Interstate 10 bridge project begins March 23

Bridge over I-10 scheduled to close April 5

Preliminary work on an Interstate 10 bridge project at the west end of Willcox at Haskell Avenue and Taylor Road is scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 23.

Crews will begin mobilizing equipment and preparing the site for a bridge redecking project. Minor traffic delays are possible for the first two weeks of the project.

The bridge over I-10 is scheduled to close to all traffic on Monday, April 5.

The overall project is scheduled to be completed in three phases:

  • Phase 1 from late March to mid-April - Mobilization and construction of a temporary traffic lane to facilitate the movement of eastbound I-10 traffic during scheduled weekend closures on  I-10.
  • Phase 2 from mid-April to late summer - Removal and replacement of the bridge deck
  • Phase 3 from late summer to early autumn - Guardrail and pavement work and cleanup

Traffic Restrictions

The eastbound I-10 exit ramp to Haskell Avenue will remain open throughout the project to allow vehicles to enter Willcox from the west. The westbound I-10 entrance and exit ramps to and from Taylor Road are scheduled to remain open.

Starting in mid-April, for several weekends, I-10 will be diverted onto the exit ramps and then back onto the entrance ramps from 8 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays. The weekend closures will allow crews to safely remove and replace the existing bridge deck. Additional ramp restrictions may be required during weekend closures to safely move traffic.

Drivers should proceed with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.
