State Route 347 work zone crash claims life of highway worker

Tragic reminder for drivers to stay alert, watch for crews and equipment

A highway maintenance crew member working for a local contractor was tragically struck and killed by a vehicle in a work zone along northbound State Route 347 north of Maricopa on Wednesday night, Dec. 16.

Details of the fatal crash are being investigated by local law enforcement. The contractor’s employee was part of a crew working to improve the pavement surface along SR 347. Crews have been sealing pavement cracks in recent weeks during overnight hours in areas between Interstate 10 and Hathaway Avenue.

“Highway construction and maintenance jobs are among the most dangerous in the nation,” said ADOT Director John Halikowski. “While this tragic event remains under investigation, it is again a reminder that drivers need to stay alert when approaching and traveling through work zones. Sadly, a family has lost a loved one. We hope all drivers will take that to heart.”

This is the second highway worker to be killed this year in an Arizona highway work zone. In March, ADOT Incident Response Unit member Frank Dorizio was fatally struck by a vehicle while helping to set up a sign alerting drivers to pavement repairs along I-10 southeast of the Phoenix area.

Dorizio was the first ADOT worker since 1998 to be struck and killed while working along a highway.

“Our goal at ADOT is to get everyone safely home with improvements that are made to your highways,” said Halikowski. “We need all drivers to treat our dedicated highway workers as family members, close friends or neighbors. Please watch out for them.”
