Paving to close northbound South Mountain Freeway this weekend

Closure runs between Lower Buckeye, Baseline roads

PHOENIX – Northbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway will close in the West Valley this weekend as construction crews continue final paving on the freeway.

Northbound Loop 202 will close between Baseline and Lower Buckeye roads from 10 p.m. Friday, June 12, until 5 a.m. Monday, June 15. Additional closures include:

  • Northbound Loop 202 on-ramps will be closed at Elliot, Dobbins, Baseline and Broadway roads and at Southern Avenue during the work.
  • The ramp connecting westbound I-10 to southbound Loop 202 will be closed from 10 p.m Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
  • All remaining ramps from I-10 to southbound Loop 202 will be closed from 1 a.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday.
  • The westbound I-10 exit ramp at 67th Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday.
  • The westbound I-10 on-ramp at 67th Avenue will be closed from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
  • The ramp from northbound Loop 202 will be closed from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Northbound drivers can exit at Dobbins or Baseline roads, travel east to 51st Avenue and north to Lower Buckeye Road to return to Loop 202. Those driving from the East Valley to the West Valley may also want to consider following Interstate 10 through central Phoenix to avoid potential delays.

If the work is completed earlier than scheduled, crews may close southbound Loop 202 between I-10 and Lower Buckeye Road for striping. That closure would take place from 1 a.m. Sunday, June 14, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 15. During that work, all ramps from I-10 to Loop 202 and southbound on-ramps at Van Buren Street and Buckeye Road would be closed. Drivers can exit I-10 at 51st or 67th avenues and drive south to enter Loop 202 at Lower Buckeye Road.

Work continues on both the 32nd Street interchange and the shared-use path between 17th Avenue and 40th Street. Both are expected to be completed by this summer.

The South Mountain Freeway opened in December. The 22-mile route provides an alternate route that may allow drivers traveling from one side of the Phoenix area to the other to avoid potential congestion in downtown Phoenix.
