Drivers should plan for overnight closures on Interstate 40 and an extended full closure of the St. Anselm Road bridge over I-40 as the Arizona Department of Transportation starts a new bridge reconstruction project between US 191 and the New Mexico state line in the community of Houck.
The scheduled restrictions during the first phase of the project are:
- The St. Anselm Road bridge over I-40 (milepost 348) will be fully closed starting Monday, May 18, through the end of September.
- Westbound I-40 will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Monday, May 18, and continuing through the morning of Thursday, May 21.
- Eastbound I-40 will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, May 20, and continuing through the morning of Friday, May 22.
- Drivers will use the on- and off-ramps at the St. Anselm Road interchange to exit and re-enter the highway.
Drivers on St. Anselm Road can use the following detours to continue north- and southbound travel:
- NORTHBOUND DETOUR: Travel eastbound on I-40, exit at Allentown Road and then make left turns to enter westbound I-40 and exit at St. Anselm Road (exit 340) to continue northbound travel.
- SOUTHBOUND DETOUR: Travel westbound on I-40, exit at Pine Springs Road and then make left turns to enter eastbound I-40 and exit at St. Anselm Road (exit 340) to continue southbound travel.
- Both north- and southbound drivers on St. Anselm Road can use the same detours to access east- and westbound I-40.
All frontage roads and I-40 ramps will remain open during the first phase of the bridge reconstruction project. Drivers should slow down and adhere to lower speed limits in construction zones.
The closures are needed so crews can safely remove and replace the bridge deck on the St. Anselm Road bridge. The 244-foot-long bridge, constructed in 1967, is a four-span continuous steel beam structure.
The St. Anselm Road bridge rehabilitation work is part of a larger ADOT project that will also reconstruct the Black Creek bridge over I-40. Construction on the Black Creek bridge is scheduled to begin in spring 2021. The Black Creek and St. Anselm Road bridges are located about one mile apart from each other.
