Expect lane and ramp closures at Interstate 17 in north Phoenix for interchange reconstruction

Full closure of I-17 at Happy Valley Road scheduled for May 1-2

Interchange reconstruction continues at Interstate 17 and Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads in north Phoenix. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to slow down and use caution around construction personnel and equipment while the following restrictions are in place:

  • The southbound I-17 Pinnacle Peak Road off- and on-ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday, April 26, to 5 a.m. Monday, April 27. The frontage road will remain open. Drivers can use the on- and off-ramps at Happy Valley or Deer Valley roads to enter and exit I-17.
  • The northbound I-17 Pinnacle Peak Road off- and on-ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. Monday, April 27, to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 28. The frontage road will remain open. Drivers can use the on- and off-ramps at Happy Valley or Deer Valley roads to enter and exit I-17.
  • North and southbound I-17 will be narrowed to one or two lanes at Pinnacle Peak Road nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Monday, April 27, and continuing through the morning of Friday, May 1.
  • The northbound I-17 Pinnacle Peak Road off-ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, to 5 a.m. Thursday, April 30. The frontage road will remain open.  Drivers can exit I-17 at Deer Valley Road and use 19th Avenue north to Pinnacle Peak Road.
  • The southbound I-17 Pinnacle Peak Road on-ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. Thursday, April 30, to 5 a.m. Friday, May 1.Drivers can use 35th or 19th avenues south to Deer Valley Road to access I-17.

Upcoming full closure of I-17:

  • I-17 will be closed in both directions at Happy Valley Road from 9 p.m. Friday, May 1, to 7 a.m. Saturday, May 2.  East and westbound Happy Valley Road at I-17 will remain open.
    • Southbound detour:  Drivers will detour along the off- and on-ramps at Happy Valley Road. Drivers can also exit ahead of the closure at Jomax Road and use southbound 19th Avenue between Jomax and Deer Valley roads. 
    • Northbound detour: Drivers will detour along the off- and on-ramps at Happy Valley Road. Drivers can also exit ahead of the closure at Deer Valley Road and use northbound 19th Avenue between Deer Valley and Jomax roads.  

Crews are on schedule to open the new tight diamond interchange at I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road later this spring. See a rendering of what the new interchange will look like here.  The project is scheduled for completion this fall.
