Loop 202 pavement repairs in Chandler area due to start this weekend

Improvement project will include diamond grinding to smooth concrete

A project to improve the pavement along sections of Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) between Interstate 10 and Loop 101 (Price Freeway) is scheduled to begin this weekend, weather permitting, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers should plan on a full closure of eastbound Loop 202 in that area from Friday night until Monday morning.

The work will include removing areas of the top layer of older, worn rubberized asphalt – especially along most of the eastbound lanes of Loop 202, followed by a process known as diamond grinding to smooth sections of the freeway’s underlying base concrete pavement.

Worn asphalt pavement also will be removed from eastbound on- and off-ramps at the Loop 202 interchanges at Kyrene Road and McClintock Drive.

As many as three specialized grinding machines will be used for the project, which is expected to be completed in March and include some restrictions on weeknights.

Freeway work in the area this weekend also is scheduled to include a closure of northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) north of Loop 202 in Chandler. The restrictions are scheduled as follows:

  • Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) closed between Interstate 10 and Loop 101 (Price Freeway) from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Feb. 24) for pavement improvements. All I-10 ramps to eastbound Loop 202 closed. DETOUR: Alternate routes include eastbound Elliot or Ray roads for eastbound travel in the Chandler area. Eastbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) traffic in the Ahwatukee area will have access to east- or westbound I-10. I-10 drivers also can consider using eastbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) while eastbound Loop 202 closure is in place. Note: Detour routes to businesses near Kyrene Road south of Loop 202 include Chandler Boulevard or Ray Road to southbound Kyrene Road.
  • Northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) closed between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and Ray Road in Chandler area from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Feb. 24) for freeway widening. All Loop 202 and Price Road ramps to northbound Loop 101 closed. Chandler Boulevard also closed in both directions at Loop 101. Use Frye Road to access Chandler Fashion Center. DETOUR: Alternate routes include northbound Dobson Road to westbound Ray Road to reach northbound Loop 101.The diamond grinding process also was used last year to smooth the right two lanes of eastbound Loop 202 near Dobson Road last year. Although much of the upcoming project’s work will be focused on eastbound Loop 202, crews also will smooth the worn westbound freeway’s exit lane and off-ramp at Kyrene Road. Crews also will patch other damaged pavement areas.
