I-10 East closed near Loop 101 this weekend for lane adjustments

Drivers will have two I-10 lanes to connect to ramp to Loop 101 North

Some drivers on eastbound Interstate 10 approaching Loop 101 in the West Valley will be seeing double by Monday morning (Feb. 10). That’s because a weekend closure will allow the Arizona Department of Transportation to adjust lane stripes along eastbound I-10 so that two lanes, rather than just one, will be available for traffic to connect to the ramp to northbound Loop 101.

It’s a safety-based change designed to improve traffic flow and reduce sudden lane changes by drivers along eastbound I-10 near Loop 101. While no new I-10 lanes are being added, the weekend changes will allow a second lane to travel to northbound Loop 101.

Crews also will restripe the northbound Loop 101 ramp to carry two lanes of traffic.

Eastbound I-10 will be closed between 107th and 99th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, while crews adjust lane stripes, pavement markings and signs along the freeway. The eastbound I-10 ramp to northbound Loop 101 will be closed and the westbound I-10 ramp to northbound Loop 101 will be narrowed to one lane. The westbound I-10 HOV lane will be closed between 91st and 107th avenues. The eastbound I-10 on-ramp at Avondale Boulevard also will be closed.

DETOURS: Traffic on eastbound I-10 will detour by exiting at 107th Avenue and using the frontage road before re-entering I-10 at 99th Avenue. Drivers also can reach northbound Loop 101 by using northbound 99th Avenue and eastbound McDowell Road to the Loop 101 on-ramp. Drivers can consider alternate routes including exiting ahead of 107th Avenue and using surface streets to travel beyond the closure.

Eastbound I-10 drivers traveling beyond the Phoenix area can consider detouring on southbound State Route 85 in the Buckeye area and using eastbound Interstate 8 to reach eastbound I-10 (toward Tucson) in Casa Grande.

This weekend’s work to allow a second eastbound I-10 lane to connect to northbound Loop 101 is similar to a 2018 ADOT project along westbound US 60 in Tempe. That project, which earned a national safety award, included lane adjustments that improved traffic flow  and significantly reduced crashes along westbound US 60 approaching the I-10 interchange.
