Motorists traveling to downtown Phoenix from the West Valley this weekend should allow extra travel time and plan ahead to avoid a closure of eastbound Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) between 83rd and 51st avenues. The closure will allow crews to apply a new layer of rubberized asphalt through the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway work zone.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed between 83rd and 51st avenues from 9 p.m., Friday, May 17, to 4 a.m., Monday, May 20.
With heavy traffic and delays expected, drivers should consider alternate routes such as Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) west of Interstate 17 or exiting eastbound I-10 sooner and taking local streets before re-entering I-10 beyond the closure point.
Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at the Loop 101, 99th and 91st avenues, along with the southbound Loop 101 on-ramp at Thomas Road, will be closed to help ease traffic backups along I-10.
Motorists traveling from the West Valley toward downtown Phoenix this weekend should allow extra travel time and plan ahead to avoid a closure of eastbound Interstate 10 (Papago Freeway) at 59th Avenue due to construction of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The entire length of the I-10 work zone, 4.5 miles between 43rd and 75th avenues, is getting a new riding surface. Work began the last two weekends west of 63rd Avenue, and crews will complete work east of 63rd Avenue in the fall after bridge work is complete in the I-10 median.
During the closure, crews will mill off the top inch of pavement that has reached the end of its service life and replace it with a new top layer of rubberized asphalt.
The South Mountain Freeway is scheduled for full completion in 2020, although traffic is expected to be using the freeway earlier. It will provide a long-planned direct link between the East Valley and West Valley and a much-needed alternative to I-10 through downtown Phoenix. Approved by Maricopa County voters in 1985 and again in 2004 as part of a comprehensive regional transportation plan, the South Mountain Freeway will complete the Loop 202 and Loop 101 freeway system in the Valley.
