I-17 project work zone setup continues near Happy Valley Road

Crews also to place temporary barriers near Pinnacle Peak Road

PHOENIX – Drivers who use Interstate 17 at night near Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads in north Phoenix should prepare for construction-related lane and shoulder closures starting Saturday night, Jan. 5, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Crews are setting work zones as part of a $50 million project to rebuild the I-17 interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads. A stretch of the southbound I-17 HOV lane in the area will be closed for approximately one year as part of the improvement project.

The following overnight restrictions are scheduled along I-17 starting this weekend:

  • Northbound I-17 narrowed to two lanes overnight between Deer Valley and Happy Valley roads from 10 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 6) for temporary barrier wall placement.
  • Southbound I-17 narrowed to two lanes overnight between Jomax and Deer Valley roads from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (Jan. 7) for barrier wall placement.
  • Southbound I-17 narrowed to two lanes overnight between Happy Valley and Deer Valley roads from 10 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 8) for barrier wall placement.
  • Northbound I-17 narrowed to two lanes overnight between Deer Valley and Happy Valley roads from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday (Jan. 9) for barrier wall placement.

Work zones to protect both workers and motorists also will require sections of I-17 right or left shoulders to be closed while the project is underway.

The I-17/Happy Valley Road interchange will be constructed with new bridge spans over I-17, additional lanes and a diverging diamond design that allows Happy Valley Road traffic to cross at signalized intersections when approaching the overpass above the freeway. As part of the project to provide improved traffic flow, crews also will remove the existing roundabouts at the interchange.

The I-17/Pinnacle Peak Road interchange will be reconstructed as a diamond interchange with larger bridge spans and more lanes for improved traffic capacity. Crews also will extend fourth general purpose lanes in each direction along I-17 between Deer Valley and Happy Valley roads.

The project is scheduled for completion in fall 2020. During construction, drivers should allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching work zones along I-17 and cross streets. Watch for construction crews and equipment in the area.
