Motorists traveling on Interstate 10 west of downtown Phoenix this weekend should allow extra travel time or plan ahead to avoid an extended closure as part of work to reconstruct ramps between 51st and 67th avenues for construction on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway.
Westbound I-10 will close between 43rd and 59th avenues from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29.
- Motorists will need to exit at 43rd Avenue and can take Van Buren Street or McDowell Road before reentering I-10 at 59th Avenue.
Westbound I-10 on-ramps at 27th, 35th and 43rd avenues will be closed.
- Westbound I-10 traffic exiting at 43rd Avenue can detour to westbound McDowell Road or Van Buren Street and re-enter I-10 west of the closure.
Southbound Interstate 17 off-ramp at McDowell Road and southbound I-17 ramp to westbound I-10 will be closed.
- Consider exiting southbound I-17 at Thomas Road and going west to travel beyond the I-10 closure.
During the weekend closure, travel lanes will be shifted and temporary concrete barrier will be placed, which is needed for the permanent closure of the I-10 westbound off-ramp at 51st Avenue (beginning Saturday, Jan. 27 through March 3). In order to build the Loop 202/I-10 freeway-to-freeway interchange, several I-10 ramps need to be removed and reconstructed to tie into the wider I-10 that will include connecting ramps to and from the South Mountain Freeway when it opens late 2019. This next phase of work will require several weekend closures of I-10 as well as long-term and permanent closures of existing on-and-off ramps between 51st and 67th avenues until new access roads are completed by fall 2018. Information about future closures is available online.
