Ongoing construction on State Route 85 in Gila Bend may delay Phoenix-bound travelers this Thanksgiving holiday

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes

YUMA With higher traffic volumes expected on our state’s highways this Thanksgiving holiday travel period, the Arizona Department of Transportation is advising drivers heading towards Phoenix of an existing roadway project that may cause delays along State Route 85 in Gila Bend.

ADOT is currently working on a $13 million safety and enhancement project at the intersection of SR 85 (Pima Street) and B-8 (Butterfield Trail Road). Although there will be no active construction during the holiday weekend, road restrictions that limit traffic to one lane in each direction are required to remain in effect which may delay motorists traveling through the established work zone.

Drivers headed to Phoenix via SR 85 should allow extra travel time and plan ahead. Alternate routes include using northbound US 95 to connect with eastbound Interstate 10 or eastbound I-8 to connect with westbound I-10 to travel towards the Phoenix area.

SR 85 travelers are advised to proceed through the project area with caution and pay close attention to signs and message boards.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule. To stay up-to-date with the latest highway conditions around the state, visit the ADOT Traveler Information Center at www.az511.gov or call 5-1-1.
