Fort Smith Board Calls Special Election on Form of Government
Fort Smith, AR - The Fort Smith Board of Directors voted unanimously Tuesday, August 18, to call a special election allowing residents to decide whether the City should change from the city administrator form of government to a mayor-council form.
The question will appear on the November 3, 2026, ballot. Voters will be asked to vote for or against organizing the City of Fort Smith under the mayor-council form of government.
The Board’s action does not change the City’s form of government. It places the decision before Fort Smith voters.
Mayor George McGill will issue a proclamation calling for the special election, which will be filed with the Sebastian County Clerk in accordance with Arkansas law.
If voters approve the change, elections for officials under the new form of government would begin in November 2028. Until then, the City will continue operating under its current city administrator form of government.
