Public Notice: Creekmore Pool Closure & Grate Repair
The City of Fort Smith Parks & Recreation Department would like to provide an update regarding the grates surrounding the main pool at Creekmore Park.
Our office received a call last week concerning fiberglass irritation, and yesterday, we were informed of a related social media post. Several individuals, including some from previous years, shared similar experiences in the comments. We want to acknowledge these concerns and assure the public that we take them seriously.
The grates around the main pool are made of fiberglass, which is a standard and accepted material for pool grates. However, fiberglass can wear down over time and, with regular use, begin to flake. While fiberglass remains a compliant material, this degradation is an example of its limitations.
To remediate the issue in the short term, we are taking the following actions:
-
Thursday, June 5 – After the pool closes for the evening, staff will lower the water level below the grates and gently pressure wash the area to remove any residue. Our circulation system will continue to operate, ensuring no debris enters the pool basin.
-
Friday, June 6 – The pool will be closed to the public. Staff will apply an epoxy sealer to the grates to prevent future flaking and allow the coating to dry thoroughly.
-
Saturday, June 7 – Water levels will be restored, and the pool will be reopened for public use.
Long-Term Plan: The Parks & Recreation Department has been exploring replacing the existing fiberglass grates with plastic alternatives, which have been successful in other municipalities. We plan to replace all fiberglass grates this winter.
We appreciate your understanding as we take these proactive steps to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for our residents and visitors.
