Fort Smith, AR - The City of Fort Smith is pleased to announce the award of $500,000 in funding from the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and Recreational Trails Program (RTP). This generous grant will help finance the continued development of the Maybranch Greenway, a project that expands the city’s trail network and promotes outdoor recreation and connectivity.
The Maybranch Greenway is a vital component of Fort Smith’s efforts to create a more walkable and bikeable community. Once completed, the Greenway will seamlessly connect the Greg Smith River Trail to the Kelley Park Ballfields. This connection will provide residents and visitors with more opportunities to enjoy Fort Smith’s natural beauty, engage in outdoor activities, and commute to numerous locations through the city.
“This grant is a testament to the city’s commitment to investing in projects that enhance the quality of life for our residents,” said Carl E. Geffken, Fort Smith City Administrator. “The Maybranch Greenway will not only provide a safe and accessible space for recreation but also strengthen connections between neighborhoods and community hubs.”
The TAP and RTP programs are designed to support infrastructure improvements that encourage non-motorized transportation and improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. By linking key recreational and community spaces, the Maybranch Greenway project aims to enhance mobility, promote healthy lifestyles, and attract visitors to the area
The City of Fort Smith is committed to providing high-quality, resident-focused services for the advancement of a thriving community. Our vision is to be a dynamic, business, family, and military-friendly destination that welcomes people from all over the world
