Skip the Garbage Disposal and Just Trash It!
How often do you use your sink’s garbage disposal? While it might seem like food disappears down the drain, small bits can build up over time, causing inconvenient and costly clogs.
As a rule, compost or trash all food waste. Some items should never go down the sink due to the damage they can cause
- Coffee grounds
- Eggshells
- Pasta & rice
- Potato & citrus peels
- Cooking oil & grease
Coffee grounds can form thick clumps, blocking the drain. Eggshells cling to pipes and can break into small pieces which may become trapped and cause buildup. Pasta, rice, and potato peels can expand when wet, causing blockages. Grease and oils can congeal, creating masses that block pipes, and cause sanitary sewer overflows.
Grinding citrus peels to freshen the sink is also a bad idea they can accumulate and cause clogs. Instead, grind ice with baking soda, salt, or dish soap. For a fresh scent, use lemon juice instead of peels. Avoid these pitfalls to save your plumbing and your wallet!
Remember- Put fats, oils and grease in the trash, NEVER down the drain!
