Summer is coming and so is the Heat!
Safety tips for working in the heat:
-
Slow Down: Reduce strenuous activities until the coolest time of the day. Children, seniors and anyone with health concerns should stay in cool areas during the peak heat of the day.
-
Dress for summer: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing to reflect the heat. Additionally, protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and using sunscreen with a high SPF.
-
Drink plenty of water (not very cold): Drink water even if you don't feel thirsty. If you're on a fluid restrictive diet, please consult a physician before increasing water intake. Also, avoid excessive consumption of sugary or caffeinated beverages (like soda) since they can contribute to dehydration.
-
Frequent breaks: Incorporate frequent breaks into your work schedule to rest and seek shade. Use these breaks to cool down, rehydrate
-
Minimize direct exposure to the sun: Sunburn reduces your body's ability to dissipate heat.
-
Time Management: Avoid the hours of 10AM-4PM as this is the peak heat times of the day. Early morning from 7AM-10AM and after 5PM will be best to do your outdoor yard work and house repairs.
-
Stay Informed: Pay attention to weather forecasts and heat advisories issued by local authorities. Knowledge of weather conditions can help you protect your health.
