Common Questions Regarding the New Animal Ordinance
What is the new animal ordinance?
On March 21, 2023, the Fort Smith Board of Directors voted unanimously in a Regular Meeting to approve an ordinance regarding impoundment, vicious animals, spay and neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping of animals.
What does this ordinance say about dogs and cats being spayed and neutered?
All dogs and cats must be spayed and neutered. If a dog or cat is secured at all times on a leash or within a secured building, enclosure or yard, then the animal is not required to be spayed or neutered. If the dog or cat is impounded by the city and is not spayed or neutered, then the dog or cat will be spayed or neutered. All fees for the procedure and impoundment will be charged to the dog or cat’s owner.
When will the spay and neuter voucher program go into effect?
The city is working to utilize the MyFortSmith app to distribute the spay and neuter voucher to residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Once that program is finalized, residents will be notified its availability.
Are there exceptions to the spay and neuter requirement?
Yes, exceptions to the spay/neuter requirement may be granted if a licensed veterinarian certifies that the surgery poses significant health risks to the animal.
What does the new ordinance say about microchipping?
All domestic dogs and cats within the city must have a microchip for identification purposes unless secured at all times on a leash or within a secured building, enclosure or yard.
