Director of Roads and Transportation, Chris Nicholson, provided the following updates regarding some major projects taking place in the County.
- Sicard Hollow & Blue Lake Road Intersection Improvements - Jefferson County and the City of Vestavia have teamed up on this $3 million dollar project to reconfigure the intersection of Sicard Hollow Road, Blue Lake Drive, and Cahaba Heights Road. The new design will replace the stop signs with a modern roundabout. The project includes roadway realignment, upgraded lighting for better nighttime visibility, improved signage, and drainage enhancements. Completion is anticipated by Fall of 2025.
- Chalkville Mtn. Road - Here we are making turn lane improvements to connect with ALDOT's interchange work. This is a $9.2 million dollar project that is currently underway. It spans 2 miles from Midway Church Road to Poplar Street and includes lane additions, optimized signal timing, and updated traffic signal coordination. The overall goal is to reduce congestion, shorten commute times, and improve overall traffic flow for one of Trussville's busiest corridors. Our part of the project is expected to be completed by Fall of 2025.
- McAshan Drive Phases 1 and 2 - The County has started a two-phase infrastructure project to modernize McAshan Drive and improve regional connectivity. Phase 1 is currently under construction. It involves widening the roadway from Bay Drive to Old Tuscaloosa Highway at a cost of $4.6 million. Completion is projected for Summer of 2026. Phase 2, is set to start soon and will extend Rock Mtn. Lakes to Bay Drive. It will include changes to the I-59/20 interchange, the addition of new interstate ramps, and the construction of a diverging diamond interchange (looking at it will certainly bake your noodle). It's one of the first in the region. The $22.5 million investment is expected to take approximately 2 years to complete and is a collaboration with ALDOT.

The Environmental Services Department has worked diligently over the past 15 years to target problem areas in the sewer system and implement strategic improvements to reduce sewer overflows. By looking at the graph below you can see how they have dramatically dropped over time. Click on the "Watch Now" button to hear David Denard, director of the department, explain how they are approaching keeping the sewer system in good working order and setting the priority for work. This year alone, they are spending $273 million on active sewer projects. You can view the map of projects here.
