The following information is from ALEA about the STAR ID deadline. We know there have been long lines, and lots of questions. We hope this information is helpful. If you have more questions, please visit the ALEA website. May 7 is not the last day citizens can obtain a STAR ID
- May 7 is the federal enforcement date. This means if you are 18 and older and plan to fly domestically after May 7, or enter certain federal facilities, then you will need a form of federally accepted ID, which is a STAR ID, unexpired and valid passport/passport card, active military ID, etc.
- If you do NOT plan to fly in May or in the immediate future, you still have plenty of time to get a STAR ID from an ALEA Examining Office after May 7.
- **A STAR ID IS NOT REQUIRED TO OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA OR TO VOTE.**
- There are 75 ALEA Examining Offices statewide. If appointments are full in your area, please check a nearby exam office.
- This is not a new program as STAR ID services were made available statewide in 2012 in Alabama. What is new and what has been extended due to covid, is the federal enforcement of the REAL ID Act. This Act was passed by congress in 2005 and requires domestic air travelers and citizens accessing certain federal facilities to have a form of federal identification, to add an extra layer of security.
- Once you complete the process of applying for a STAR ID, it will simply be added to your regular Alabama Driver License. A gold star will be displayed at the top left-hand corner of your ID once you receive the hard copy in the mail. It is NOT a separate ID that you have to keep up with in addition to your regular Alabama license.
- If you have a regular Alabama Driver License without the gold star that was issued after April 26, 2022, it will display “Not for federal identification” at the top of the card.
- If you have a valid, unexpired passport/passport card, or other accepted form of federal identification as listed on TSA’s website, then you do not necessarily need a STAR ID unless you want it.

Because #1 and #2 are so important at Buc-ee's (as well as additional growth in the area) The Environmental Services Department is expanding the pump station in front of Buc-ee's to handle the 'flow' of things. The work also includes some pipe expansion taking place further up the road. We appreciate the community's patience with this work!
If you want to see all of the Environmental Services work in the County you can visit its construction map here.
